Pre-Completion Optional Practical Training
Pre-Completion OPT
Pre-completion OPT is a benefit for F-1 students in good standing. It allows students to accept off-campus work directly related to their concentration or major field of study, while still enrolled and working toward completing degree requirements. (For OPT following completion of degree requirements, review our Post-completion OPT page, instead.)
If you are interested in pursuing pre-completion OPT, read through the following sections and contact your ISSS advisor if you have any questions.
Pre-completion OPT Eligibility and Restrictions
Pre-completion OPT is available under the following conditions:
- You are currently in valid F-1 status and are still working toward completing your degree requirements
- You have been a full-time student for at least one academic year by the time your pre-completion OPT starts
- If you have been enrolled for less than a full academic year, you can only apply up to 90 days before completing your first academic year
- You must have a declared concentration or major, because pre-completion OPT is limited to employment related to your field of study
- Your training will start and end prior to your current program end date indicated on your Form I-20
- You have not already used 12 months or more of OPT at your current degree level
Impact on Post-Completion OPT
F-1 students are typically granted up to 12 months of OPT eligibility at each degree level, including any authorizations for pre- and post-completion OPT. Consequently, any application for pre-completion OPT may affect your overall eligibility for post-completion OPT.
- Part-time pre-completion OPT will deduct from your 12 months of OPT eligibility at a half-time rate (e.g., 4 months of part-time OPT will count as 2 months of full-time OPT, leaving you with 10 months of remaining OPT eligibility)
- While you do not need a job offer to apply for pre-completion OPT, any approved period of pre-completion OPT will deduct from your overall OPT eligibility, regardless of whether you actually utilize it
Application Considerations
Pre-completion OPT requires two steps. First, you must request a Form I-20 from ISSS recommending you for pre-completion OPT. Second, after receiving your pre-completion OPT I-20, you must then submit a Form I-765 application to USCIS. See the section below for more details.
- USCIS processing times using standard processing can be lengthy (over 4 months); premium processing requires USCIS to process the application in 30 days or less, upon completion of biometrics
- Part-time and full-time OPT require separate applications; they cannot be combined into one
