Student Visas and U.S. Immigration Requirements
Coming to the U.S. on a student visa comes with certain requirements under U.S. immigration law
Basic Immigration Requirements for Students
Before you come to the U.S. as an F-1 or J-1 international student, it's important to read through and understand these key immigration expectations and requirements under U.S. immigration law. Contract your ISSS advisor if you have any questions - we are here to help!
- Student visas (like the F-1 and J-1 visa) are non-immigrant visas. This means that you are coming the U.S. for a temporary period of time to study, and will continue to maintain ties to your home country.
- Full-time study is required and should be the primary purpose. While part-time study may be allowed in very specific situations, in general anyone on a student visa must study full-time and make consistent progress toward their degree. Other objectives, such as getting work experience, are considered secondary and subject to immigration restrictions.
- While in the U.S., you are expected to comply with other U.S. federal and state laws. These other laws may include tax laws, criminal laws, traffic laws, and more. Failure to comply with U.S. laws may jeopardize your student visa.
- You need to have sufficient funding throughout your studies. While some students may get on-campus jobs or scholarships or fellowships, it's up to you to plan ahead so that you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses at all times.
- You need to follow the rules specific to your visa. Each visa has specific rules. Read on for more information about F-1 visa or J-1 student visa requirements.
Finally, it is important to know that U.S. immigration rules and regulations may change at any time, and with little advance notice. In particular, rules relating to visa processing, entry into the U.S., and work benefits while in the U.S., can change. Staying connected to ISSS will help you keep up to date on your requirements.
