• You will be provided a link to the ISSS Marketplace when submitting your STEM Extension Request in the ISSS Gateway student portal. Please choose the correct fee. Upon payment, you will receive a receipt. Please save the receipt as a PDF, which you will need to upload along with other materials needed for your STEM Extension OPT request.
• There are no waivers or exemptions to this fee. However, if you decide not to apply for the STEM Extension of OPT but already paid the Administrative Fee, please send an email to isss@brown.edu to request a refund.
• LATE SUBMISSION CHARGE: If you submit your STEM Extension OPT request two weeks (14 calendar days) or less before the expiration of your current post-completion OPT, a late submission charge of $75.00 will also apply (effective August 1, 2026). In order to avoid the late submission charge, submit your request in the ISSS Gateway at least fifteen days or more before your post-completion OPT expires.

For J-1 students applying for Academic Training following completion of their J-1 academic program. There is no fee for pre-completion Academic Training. Please be sure to confirm your eligibility for Academic Training before paying this non-refundable fee. If you have any questions, contact your ISSS advisor.

• You will be provided a link to the ISSS Marketplace when submitting your Academic Training request in the ISSS Gateway student portal. Please choose the correct fee. Upon payment, you will receive a receipt. Please save the receipt as a PDF, which you will need to upload along with other materials needed for your STEM Extension OPT request.
• The fee amount depends on the expected length of your Academic Training period. Please pay the correct fee to ensure faster processing of your Academic Training request.
  • For Academic Training periods of six months or less, the Short-term fee applies
  • For Academic Training periods longer than six months, the Standard fee applies
• Fee payment must be made when submitting your Academic Training request in the ISSS Gateway. Please upload a copy of your payment receipt into the ISSS Gateway, along with other materials needed for your Academic Training request.

• For J-1 exchange visitors invited to come to Brown under the Visiting Research Program. Please be sure to confirm your acceptance by the Graduate School at Brown to participate in the Visiting Research Fellow program before paying this non-refundable fee.
• The fee amount depends on the expected duration of your stay at Brown as a Visiting Research Fellow
  • For visits of six months or less, the Short-term fee applies
  • For visitings lasting longer than six months, the Standard fee applies
• Fee payment must be made when submitting your request to ISSS for a DS-2019. Please attach a copy of your payment receipt.
• The fee may not be refunded once you initiate the J-1 visa application process with a U.S. consulate
• The fee does not apply to the following:
  • Visiting Research Fellows who are already in the U.S. and who do not need visa sponsorship from Brown University
  • Visiting Research Fellow extensions

Description:

• Due to the high volume of last minute processing requests, there will be a $75.00 late submission processing charge for any requests submitted to ISSS less than 15 days before the required deadline.
• At this time, this late submission processing charge only applies to F-1 students applying for the STEM Extension of OPT. Any STEM Extension OPT request must be submitted 15 days or more before the expiration of their post-completion OPT in order to avoid the late submission processing charge.
