Spring Break Travel Reminders

Dear International Students and Scholars:

As spring break approaches, ISSS is sending the following resources regarding international and domestic travel. We encourage you to review the information below to help you prioritize your travel readiness and travel safety.

Travel Risks and Safety

Due to current regional crises, international flights in different areas are experiencing cancellations, delays, and other disruptions that may persist throughout the upcoming weeks. Please monitor updates from your airline regularly, and prioritize your safety. Be prepared to reassess travel needs and risks accordingly.

We also recommend reviewing the information on our Assessing Travel Safety page, which discusses factors that may impact individual travel safety. Our website also lists re-entry requirements for international students and international scholars returning to the U.S. following an international trip.

Brown-Related Travel

If you are planning to go on Brown-related travel (i.e., Brown funded or sponsored activity), review updates to Brown's travel policies as announced through the Brown Travel office, especially as these may change in response to current travel conditions. Any international Brown travel should be registered with TravelSafe. Registration of domestic Brown travel is not required, but strongly encouraged.

Other Travel Resources and Reminders

  • If you decide to remain in the U.S. for the spring recess, review our guidelines for Local and Domestic Travel. Even if remaining in the U.S., it is important to have your identity and immigration status documents accessible at all times, in case of an emergency.
  • F-1 students and J-1 students and scholars should check their most recent Form I-20 / Form DS-2019 for a valid travel signature if traveling internationally. If you need to request a travel signature, follow the instructions on our Requesting a Travel Signature page.
  • If your documents are lost or stolen while inside or outside the U.S., follow the guidelines on our Lost or Stolen Travel Documents page.
  • Under automatic revalidation rules, F-1 and J-1 students are allowed to travel to Canada, Mexico, or the adjacent islands of the Caribbean (excluding Cuba) on a valid or expired visa. Carry all required travel documents, including your Form I-94 record showing your current status.
  • After returning to the U.S., review your Form I-94 arrival record to ensure that all information is correct. Read our Checking Your I-94 page for more details.
Note for OPT Applicants

If you applied for F-1 post-completion Optional Practical Training, but are planning to travel during spring break, ISSS recommends that you check your myUSCIS account while on vacation. USCIS may send you a request for additional information, including a possible biometrics appointment, while you are away. Appointments may be rescheduled, but prompt attention is recommended.

Spring Break Hours and Contact

ISSS will be open during the spring recess for normal business hours, and can be reached by phone or email. If you experience an after-hours situation, contact the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management at (401) 863-3322, and ask to be connected to an ISSS staff member.

With best wishes for a restful break,
